Making Movies with No Money

Anyone can make a movie. You just have to make your movie.

I'm living proof.

As an underground independent filmmaker, I make movies. I make movies with no money. I make films that are real, eye-opening, and films that most people are afraid to make.

And there is an audience hungry for that type of filmmaking.

No budget underground filmmaking.

To date, my films have screened at over 400 film festivals worldwide since I first started making films back in 2006. Just in the last year, I've made several films: a feature film documentary about burlesque that has screened at over 45 film festivals since last summer, and taken top honors at film festivals in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Kansas City, Seattle and Des Moines; 3 short films that have screened at over 30 film festivals over the last year; and now, a new short film that is having it's festival World Premiere this coming weekend in San Francisco.

And that one will explode on the festival circuit as well.

As an underground filmmaker, you don't make any money. But you can make films with no money. And have them screen around the world with no money. And build an audience hungry for your next movie with no money.

If you look at this as a business, and as a project to share your art with the world, there is no limit.

Make your movie.

https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/646348
NO BUDGET FILMMAKING
The Ebook
FREE During the 2017 Sundance & Slamdance Film Festivals

Well, it's about that time.

I've been working like a madman getting ready for the Park City madness that's called Sundance.

But to be honest....I'm looking much more forward to being at Slamdance.

The Park City madness is getting ready to start. I'm about ready for the insanity.

It's a job just getting ready for the annual adventure. Since my first film screened in Park City at Slamdance in 2006, I've been there 5 times in the last 10 years. This will make my 6th trip in the last 11 years.

A lot's changed over the years. And not for the better. But every year's different. This'll be my first trip back to Sundance and Slamdance in 3 years. The 2017 edition. It'll be interesting to see how things have changed, what's different and what's stayed the same.

Got a jammed packed schedule. I'll be arriving tomorrow, and staying for 5 days. Every day is packed with things to do, and I'm not even there yet. Between all the parties, panels, events, lounges, networking and films to see, there's going to be too much to do.

But what I'll enjoy most....is reuniting and networking with my Slamdance family.

We'll see what we get done.

I'll be there trying to find people for my next feature film. Plus, making my new ebook NO BUDGET FILMMAKING free during the entire film festival. Through Sundance & Slamdance 2017. Here's access to the free ebook during the 2017 Park City madness called Sundance & Slamdance:

Okay. Let's see what we can get done today before heading up to Park City.

Sundance & Slamdance 2017 - Time for the Park City Madness

Well, it's that time of year again.

Time for the annual Park City madness.

The 2017 Sundance Film Festival starts Thursday. The Slamdance Film Festival starts Friday.

And I can't wait.

It's been 3 years since I've been up to the hill. First film screened at Slamdance in 2006. Have had several films play there over the years. Was on the Jury 4 years ago. A programmer 3 years ago.

True independent film is in my blood.

It'll be interesting to see how much it's changed in 3 years. When I was going annually, every year was a change. And not for the better. It's becoming more commercial and star driven every year.

Let's see how it is in 2017.

I'll be there promoting my new NO BUDGET FILMMAKING ebook and looking for people to work on my next feature film.

I can't wait for the Park City madness.

No Budget Filmmaking - Wrapping up 2016

Well, 2016's coming to a close. What have you done this year with your creative juices?

Anyone can make a movie. With no money. I'm living proof.

What a year. It's December. Reflecting back on 2016, I've got a lot done. Made a new short film and got it already screened to over 20 film festivals this year. Ran for Congress. Had films screen at over 50 film festivals this year. And am editing a new short film to come out early 2017.

All on no money.

It's amazing what you can get done with nothing.

Wrapping Up Summer in the Middle of Nowhere

THE UNDERGROUND FILMMAKER

It's been a busy summer.

To put it mildly, it's been one hell of a summer.

And there's still the month of August to go.

What can you get done in the middle of nowhere? On no money? With no budget?

Quite a bit. I'm living proof.

Since I came back to my ghost town the end of January, a lot's been done out here in the middle of nowhere:

Made a new short film
Wrote a new book
Screened films at over 50 film festivals worldwide
Ran a monthly free short film festival worldwide
Ran for U.S. Congress

All on no money.

That's just a recap off the top of my head. A lot of other things have happened too.

And things just keep rocking.

I love being an underground filmmaker.

One Busy Month with Filmmaking, Writing & Running for Congress

THE UNDERGROUND FILMMAKER

It's one busy month.

This month I've been making movies, writing and campaigning for my Congress campaign.

The shoot for the documentary film is clipping along. One day at a time.

Our short films continue to clip along and rock the film festival circuit. This week, I received invites to submit short films to another 15 film festivals around the world. And this month, 4 of our newest films are screening at film festivals in Los Angeles, Seattle, Cyprus and South Africa.

Writing a new book right now. Have almost 200 pages done. Have about 70 more to go.

And the Congress campaign. Back in March, I filed for U.S. Congress as a Democratic candidate. 10 years ago, I won the primary with over 70 percent of the vote, and received over 35 percent of the vote in the General Election with no money and no contributions. Here, 10 years later, it'll be interesting to see what happens. The primary is in August. So for the primary, I'm doing a self-funded no budget campaign. Let's see what happens.

Busy times in the middle of nowhere.

All you need is an idea, a camera and a computer.

A lot goes into each process:

Development: an idea
Pre-production: putting it all together
Production: shooting the film
Post-production: editing the film
Distribution: playing your film on the film festival circuit.

Busy Times for Underground Filmmaking

What a Summer.

And this week, fall begins.

It's been some time since I've been able to write anything. So much going on.

Our 2 new short films are taking the independent film world by storm. DOCKERY & SON had it's World Premiere in Arizona back in January; and has screened over 20 film festivals worldwide so far this year. This weekend, it's screening in Birmingham at the Sidewalk Film Festival.

Our newest film, the documentary short film HOLLYWOOD GALS had its World Premiere the beginning of this month in Iowa at the Snake Alley Film Festival and won Runner Up, Best Documentary Film. This month, it's screened festivals in Iowa, Oregon and Indiana. Next month, HOLLYWOOD GALS screens in California; DOCKERY & SON in California; THE ACCEPTABLE SIN at 2 festivals in India; and October and November has screenings already lining up for our films!!! Screenings already lined up in Washington, Oregon, Oklahoma and India. With more to come.

Last week, we got HOLLYWOOD GALS off to Sundance. And weekly, receive about 15 to 20 invitations from film festivals from around the world to submit our films.

I love being a truly independent underground filmmaker.

Here's a partial list of film festivals we're screening at from this month until November:

AUGUST 2015

HOLLYWOOD GALS - Snake Alley Film Festival - Iowa
HOLLYWOOD GALS - Portland Rising Film Festival - Oregon
HOLLYWOOD GALS - Middlecoast Film Festival - Indiana
DOCKERY & SON - Sidewalk Film Festival - Alabama

SEPTEMBER 2015

HOLLYWOOD GALS - Joshua Tree Film Festival - California
THE ACCEPTABLE SIN - Voices From the Waters Festival - India
THE ACCEPTABLE SIN - Int'l Film Fest of Shimla - India

OCTOBER 2015

TITS - Post Alley Film Festival - Washington
HOLLYWOOD GALS - Portland Rising Film Festival - Oregon

NOVEMBER 2015

HOLLYWOOD GALS - Eyecatcher Film Festival - Oklahoma
THE ACCEPTABLE SIN - Cineframe - India

And here's just a taste of what else has happened in 2015:

DOCKERY & SON has screened film festivals in Louisiana, Arizona, California, Alabama, New York, Mississippi, Albania, and Tirana

TITS has screened in Albania and the UK

THE ACCEPTABLE SIN has screened festivals in Los Angeles and the UK

PHONE SEX GRANDMA, THE OUTHOUSE and WOODY THE REDNECK have screened film festivals in Los Angeles

What a year. And it's only August.

It's amazing what you can do as a filmmaker when you have no money.

Underground Filmmaking in Los Angeles

The Underground Filmmaker

It's easy to make a movie. If you want to make a movie.

All you have to do is start making your movie.

I'm living proof that anyone can make a movie. With no money. And be a well known filmmaker around the world.

All you have to do to start is get a cheap camera and start shooting.

Well, I'm here in Hollywood. Got back here in November from back home in the Ozarks, and over these first 4 months here in Los Angeles, it's been maddening. Things have been taking off with a bang.

The free monthly short film screening series I started back home, we brought here to L.A.; and it's exploded. Every month, we have a free short film screening event at different bars across Los Angeles, and get huge turnouts:

Back in November, I began shooting a No Budget feature film documentary about actors trying to make it in Hollywood. And shooting is clipping along. There's a lot of actors in this city:

My latest short film, the brand new documentary short DOCKERY & SON had its World Premiere last month at a film festival in Louisiana. And next month, screens film festivals in Arizona, California and Indiana:

Phoenix Film Festival
Riverside Film Festival
River Bend Film Festival

And that doesn't include everything else going on in this city right now.

Being here in Los Angeles, a creative mind finds the time to shine. And you don't have to be with the big name studios to get your work out and seen in this city. Screw the artificial Hollywood film industry. People in this city are hungry for original, no budget film.

Underground filmmaking. It rocks. I love it.

I love being a filmmaker. I love making movies with no money.

Monthly Short Film Screening Series Comes to the Ozarks

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEW SHORT FILM SCREENING SERIES COMES TO THE OZARKS

Free Monthly Touring Film Series for the 4 States to Start in Lamar June 28th

Burbank, California – Hollywood's independent film world is coming to the 4 states.

Ozark Shorts, a new groundbreaking free traveling film festival in the 4 states, will start on June 28th in Lamar.

This unique event is an Ozarks monthly traveling short film series of family-friendly short films from around the world.

People in the 4 states need to be given the opportunity to see great independent films from around the world they would otherwise never get the opportunity to see”, said the festival's founder Jack Truman. “There is a great creative world of short filmmakers that want to share their art and get their messages out. Everyone should have the chance to see great art without paying a cent”.

Truman, an award – winning independent filmmaker and 4 state native, came up with the idea for a free film festival for the 4 states while his own films were playing worldwide on the film festival circuit.

Over the last 10 years, I've had the fortunate experience of having my film work screen around the world to independent film audiences”, states Truman. “There's so many cultures, experiences, lives and topics that people never get to know about. And film festivals, whether big or small, offer their local community the chance to see a touch of these different cultures and lifestyles. I've never found anything here back home in the Ozarks that's given this community the chance to share this artistic experience. Hopefully, this screening series will open a new door to people's eyes in the 4 states”.

The first screening event is scheduled Saturday June 28th at 1:00 pm in the Lamar Library at 10th and Cherry in Lamar, Missouri. Selected filmmakers will be in attendance from around the world to visit and discuss their screened film.

Future monthly screenings will take place in different towns each month in the 4 state area at local libraries, senior citizen centers, churches and other venues.

For more information about screening events and having a free event in your town, visit Ozark Shorts on Facebook at http://facebook.com/ozarkshorts
